Desley and all,

One night some years back I stopped at a large service station beside Amberley Air Force base, just west of Ipswich, where a Kookaburra was sitting on the steel tubing forming part of the roof.  In the short time I was filling up three times it flew towards the service station area where it  would very dexterously pluck a moth from the building wall.  There was a lot to choose from as they were also attracted by the strong lights. Although the immediate vicinity was lighter than daylight away from the station it was a very black night and about 9.00pm.

Subject: [BIRDING-AUS] KOOKABURRA FEEDING AT NIGHT

From Desley Williams in Mackay

Have any birders ever seen kookaburras feeding at night time?   Last night whilst driving to a local beach I saw what I thought was a frogmouth fly down in front of the car; I slammed on the brakes, just missing the bird and to my surprise it was a kookaburra catching a moth inf ront of my car light.  It ate the moth before flying off.        Today again at the same location I saw a kookaburra (probably the same bird) sitting on the electric light post; he should have been sleeping!         I wonder if there is a shortage of reptiles so the kooka was seeking moths.
