The birds don't care what you think! To see just how complicated speciation is I suggest that you read 'The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time" by Jonathan Weiner. (As well as being a fascinating and well written book.) The real problem to my mind is that a becoming a specie is an ongoing story in time and we are trying to take a snap shot at just one particular time.
