Afternoon All.
Sacred Ibis have been only very unusually seen by me in Mulgoa Valley
over the past twenty years, but around six weeks ago small groups started
flying in from the east during late afternoon, and after trying various
sites on Mulgoa Creek, well over a hundred now roost in trees around the
small dam at the n.w. corner of Mulgoa and Mayfair Roads, departing from
dawn onwards, in dribs and drabs back toward the general direction of
Prospect Resevoir/Eastern Creek tip.
Presumably they have been displaced by the push to cull them from other
parts of Sydney, or maybe have just multiplied beyond the capacity of their
previous roosts.
They are an argumentative and noisy lot, the dam is developing that
overcrowded waterbird smell as well. A Maltese market gardener lives a
hundred metres away, going by the numerous reports we've had about the sad
state of wildlife protection in Malta, perhaps these Sacred birds won't last
long. Are they edible?
Cheers
Michael
