The New Atlas vignettes

With so many others having received their New Atlas, I was starting to
wonder if mine had gone astray. However, yesterday it arrived and I was
interested to have a look at the vignettes which have copped some criticism
on this list. Personally, I like them very much. As with the previous
Atlas, I enjoy comparing the styles of the different artists and it is this
variety of styles which make the vignettes a particular appealing feature
for me. Several people have criticised the Diamond Firetail illustration in
particular, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think it
is particularly good. In my opinion it's not meant to be a realistic
portayal, rather a stylised impression. I like its minimalism and
interesting lines.

While I'm not an artist myself and I don't personally know any of the
artists whose work appears in the book, can I suggest that those who were
disappointed, try looking at them not as if this were a field guide, but
with an appreciation of the textures and compositions. Just my two cents
worth.

Cheers

Carol
