Have a closer look at what
this quote actually states "And hunters say an aerial drop of 1080
pellets to poison TB-infected possums last year decimated 90% of the deer to the
north of the Blue Mountains in west Otago."
If it decimated 90% of them, then it
killed 10% of 90% of them. In other words it killed 9% of them.
Decimated does not mean
killed, it means killed one tenth of the population. So what these unknown
hunters allegedly observed was a 9% mortality, (which seems more believable,)
if this quote is interpreted to mean what it actually
says. SO WHAT, a 9% mortality is usually trivial amongst other
natural impacts, unless decimation happens repeatedly.
The debate is not about whether animals or people are to blame
for what animals do naturally. Unfortunately we can't turn the clock back and
for reasons of the greater biodiversity good we need methods to control some
animals that we people, in our former ignorance put in the wrong
place.

Earlier this month, a plan by the Wellington Regional Council to carry
out a 1080 drop angered residents in Upper Hutt.
Local 1080 opponents say 29 dogs died of 1080 poisoning in the last
aerial drop in 1998.
And hunters say an aerial drop of 1080 pellets to poison TB-infected
