Hi birders

Thanks to those who took part in my 2003 field guide survey.  I've been too busy to undertake any analyses beyond the basic results.  Maybe January 2004??

Which is timely ... given news I noticed in the recent catalogue from Andrew Isles bookshop.  Namely that:

  • A new edition of the one volume Slater is due in November, and will feature 10 new plates & line drawings, 18 new species descriptions, 14 new or revised maps, and updates to nomenclature.
  • A new edition of Pizzey & Knight (edited by Peter Menkhorst), also due in November, which will feature a significant revision with some revised plates.
Given that these two guides were far and away the most popular in my survey, I expect that new editions might be highly sought after by birders.  I imagine that if the Slater revision is a good one, it will improve its position even further - its size is a major selling point, only slightly offset by the current edition being somewhat dated.

I await with interest ...
