Congratulations to Tom for bringing this matter to the attention of birdwatchers world wide. I have taken action by using the letter as offered but also urge birders to take the time to write directly to the Prime Minister of Australia. You can do so on his webpage at http://www.pm.gov.au/email.cfm

For the sake of birding-aus members I clip Tom's message. I can not remember seeing him send it to that group. Tom, I trust you do not mind. I also wrote to the Leader of the Opposition and the Shadow Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Mr K Rudd.

"I'm not sure if you are aware but Australian Mining Companies, Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Newcrest (assisted by the Australian government) are currently lobbying the Indonesian government for the opportunity to open up national parks for mining on Sulawesi and other islands. This was reported earlier today on the 'Morning Show' on the Australian ABC's
Triplej radio station. I'm sure most birders will be opposed to this,  please take a look at:

and make your own judgement.

There is a webpage with a letter to the Indonesian Minister of Forestry on
