Well, I've got goose egg all over my face. Stephen Grose mentioned that a WIN TV news item mentioned 8 Magpie Geese near Dubbo and I corrected him, saying there were only 5. Well, when I saw them on Wednesday last week there were only five (and had only been five since their arrival the previous Sunday). When the first TV interview was done the next day there were still only five but when the crew returned on Friday to get extra footage there were 8! I was out of town Thursday - Monday. To add to this little story I should mention that there are now also 10 at Narromine (40 km west of Dubbo) and 19 at Rawsonville (15 km west of Dubbo). This is all very interesting as while Magpie Geese are regular in the Macquarie Marshes (some 200 km north west of Dubbo) they aren't often seen around here. Was it a coincidence that the birds were first seen just after the very strong north-westerly winds of Sunday 24 August?
