Chris Tzaros recently posted a report on a visit to Kooyoora State Park
where he said that Western Gerygones had returned with them being a
migratory species. This made me think but I wanted to check HANZAB before
sending a question. HANZAB confirmed my suspicions and I would like to ask:
Does anyone know where Western Gerygone's go over winter?
When I lived at Griffith I rarely bothered tracking down Western Gerygones
because of their distinctive call. However, on a few occassions when they
weren't calling they proved incredibly difficult to get a look at. I often
thought that possibly they weren't moving away and were just staying silent
and being very obtrusive.
I have looked at the banding records I have for Charcoal Tank NR (near West
Wyalong, central NSW) with the following months of banding records (ie not
requiring call to be heard to record) - Jan(3), Mar(1), Apr(1), Sep(5),
Oct(1) and Dec (1 retrap). Not many birds but seem to match a pattern that
would indicate a spring/summer migrant.
If this is the case where do they go? HANZAB seems to indicate this is not
well known. Is this because they don't call during the off-breeding season.
They are obviously not like many migrants from this time of year that cross
over to New Guinea. Does anyone from up north have winter records of Western
Gerygone (or even better down south).
