Like a number of others I 'partook' (with Friends of French island) in the
annual winter count for Orange-bellied Parrots in Victoria. Our locality
was French Island, particularly the saltmarsh areas north and south of the
Tankerton jetty. There was additonal interest this year after the reports
of OBPs near Sydney (?).
We drew a blank on the OBPs (again!) but finally reported 10 Blue-winged
Parrots in the Tortoise Head saltmarsh south-east of Tankerton.
Many other birds were seen on the day but highlights were
- 120 Pied Oystercatchers sitting on the old Tankerton jetty.
- about 70 Red-necked Stints waiting for the tides to change between
Chilcott Rocks and Tankerton.
On the way back to Tankerton and the ferry we had nice views from the new
French Island Farm Bed 'n Breakfast, while we feasted on fresh home-made
gem scones and iced banana cake and watched Wedge-tailed Eagles soar by. A
very pleasant way to keep out of the strong, cold winds while bird
watching!
cheers
