About that Song Trush. Anthea said "Nice to know some have
survived the
drought. I am certain that their numbers have been locally
reduced over
the last few years."
Certainly around Bayside, SE Melbourne, ST numbers have
fluctuated during the drought with only 2 birds located in
the whole of 2001. But there are a few singing now.
But not because the drought is over, far from it.
Melbourne's reservoirs are at 40.1% of capacity vs. 52% last
August with July rainfall here heading towards about 25% of
average July figures.
And Anthea might have called her posting "what happened to
winter in Melbourne ?". On 17 July I saw an Australian
Admiral feeding on Coast Tea-tree Blossom. Neither should
be out now. And Musk Lorikeets are coming back 4 months
ahead of schedule (possibly because of the effects of the
fires as well as the drought hitting the fruit farmers...).
