Following Timothy Hyde's posting, I would like to add that I agree with all
he has said about Bowra, (Mick and I were travelling with Timothy and
Lynda). We had a wonderful time - Ian and Julie were always ready to help -
and the birds most co-operative.
Highlights included:
Budgerigars and Crimson Chats together on the ground in the early morning
sun - a stunning colour combination.
A pair of Black Falcons flying over the homestead, scaring the wits out of
every bird in sight.
Several good sightings of Brolgas, including one dancing along the track in
front of us.
White-browed and Masked Woodswallows everywhere - on the ground, on low
shrubs, preening in the morning sun before taking to the air.
Three coloured male Splendid Wrens fighting each other on the dust.
A Spotted Bowerbird and his bower with an interesting "picket fence" made
from fence staples and an artistic collection of treasures including a
teaspoon and a glass marble.
Hall's Babblers were almost too easy. We stopped at the first nests we saw,
walked 20 metres and there they were.
A small flock of Bourke's Parrots feeding quietly on the ground.
A Black-breasted Buzzard soaring in the morning sun.
Finally the hard one - Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush. We dipped the first
time but the next time after walking around for what seemed like hours,
heard one call and Lynda's sharp eyes soon found it for us. The male flew
up onto a small bush giving clear, if distant views.
Altogether we saw a total of 80 species and can't wait to return.
