G'day all,

I am slowly putting together an ID table for the Swinhoe's and Latham's Snipes
But a spelling query has prompted the following trail.

Hanzab
Latham's Snipe Gallinago hardwickii
J. E. Gray, 1931, Zool Misc: Misc 16 - Tasmania
The specific epithet is in honour of Charles Hardwick of Tasmania, who discovered the bird.

Literature of Australian Birds (Whittell, 1954)
Charles Hardwicke .. of Tasmania. Discovered the snipe named Scolopax Hardwickii by J.E.Gray in 1931

BOCA Report Number 6, Additions & Emmendations to Whittell
Has no additional information

A Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names, Jobling
hardwickie/hardwickii
1 Major Gen Thomas Hardwicke, (1756-1835) Indian Army and naturalist (Chloropsis)
2 Charles Hardwicke (fl.1831) collector in Tasmania

Birds - Their Latin Names Explained, Gotch
Japanese Snipe G.hardwickii
Named after Maj.Gen T Hardwick, FRS (1756-1835) a naturalist in India

Handbook of the Birds of the World Vol.3, p492
No information

Bright Sparcs

which has a Charles Hardwick
- born Lincoln, England, 2/8/1978,
- married 18/1/1820,
- died Launceston 27/8/1880
Could this be our man ?

They had a child Charlotte Hardwicke borne 20/1/1819

A reference I do not have is
Gray, 1931,  Zool. Misc, Vol. i, p16
I guess this is "The Zoological Miscellany" which was published between 1831-1844 and
edited by Gray (or Grey see http://www.zoonomen.net/cit/jourz.html)
Q1 Would anyone have access to this journal and read or preferably be able to copy the original reference for me ?

Q2 Is there any other information available about Charles Hardwick(e)

Regards
Bob Forsyth, Mount Isa, NW Qld.
