Just to add to Lawrie's comments: $1049 is basically cost price for the Coolpix 4500 in Australia. Dealers get a rebate from Nikon after making a sale, so many are selling at cost just to get the rebate. Peter
Hi birders This is not meant to be an advertisement, so I'll keep my comments general. Anyone who has kept an eye on the digiscoping phenomenon (see Birding-Aus archive for an explanation of what this is) will have noticed that a group of swivel design Nikon Coolpix cameras (current the 4500) dominate the field. There are a number of technical features which contribute to this - principally the small diameter lens, and completely internal zoom - it's also a pretty decent 4MP camera for other purposes, particularly macrophotography. Anyhow, the gist of this message is that the price is falling - perhaps the 4500 is about to be superseded - but the lowest retail price has fallen by about 30% in the last year or so since it was released. Now or soon might be a good time to buy - contact me if you're interested in where I got mine (in Australia) for $1049 (most others still selling it for $1300-1500).
