Hi all,
I've just been out on Shipley Plateau, near Blackheath NSW, rugged up
against an icy wind which is blowing across the heath. There I watched a
magnificent display of what is sometimes called "pot-hooking" or the
"undulating display" of a Wedge-tailed Eagle. The bird, high above the
cliffs, would fold its wings and drop vertically for 20 metres or so and
then rise steeply and effortlessly, stalling for a moment in a completely
upright pose with wings outstretched, before dropping into another dive. It
repeated this diving and climbing about a dozen times in a graceful
rollercoaster ride, maintaining absolute control in the rough and wintry
conditions. Made my afternoon!
