Bernie took two Sony omni lavaliere mics (about $350 each), and hooked
them to a string tied around a tree trunk about the same diameter as a

I recall an article in Electronics Australia(?) quite a few years ago
which adopted a similar approach to stereo recording. They used a dummy
head (wig stand?) and a couple of electret microphone inserts stuck in
the ears. The idea is it mimics what your ears actually hear, and thus
give a "realistic" stereo recording.
There are numerous commercial versions that cost a fortune (it must be
expensive to design a suitably thick head...) You can also get some
microphones that fit in your ears like "bud" headphones; you supply the
"dummy head", of course. :-)
