On Sunday morning we enjoyed a
very pleasant outing with a group from Friends of Braeside around the large
wetlands that have been created in the borrow pits of the industrial estate
called Woodlands, which can be reached from the Lower Dandenong Rd entrance.
It's nice to be able to walk so close to the water/reed edge in the very
attractive surroundings complete with picnic table on the bank. There is also an
area of bushland to walk through, but we didn't see much
there.
As we walked around we were somewhat annoyed by
the 2 different lots of dog-owners who allowed their dogs to swim, one the full
length of about 600M, harassing by barking at the ducks etc. and flushing out an
Australian Bittern. Fortunately for the owners we did not meet up with them -
the dogs were totally unsupervised . Of course there are no signs regarding dogs
on leads or in the water - not that many uncaring people would take notice
anyway.
It was good to see a pair of
swans nesting, but what hope have the reed nesters with dogs running
through!
(Later, nearby at the Waterways new housing
area, it was great to see the magpie goose again - just a solitary one still who
doesn't seem to want to find a mate. This is another area which is subjected to
harassing dogs.)
