Greeting Tom,
We saw birds which we were satisfied were the above on
three consecutive days at Bowra. On the first day there was a party of
about ten birds, and on each subsequent day, they were more scattered,
so that we saw about 3 or 4 at a time. They were all in the vicinity of
the stoney lookout hill. On each occasion we had good views, as the
birds remained in the immediate vicinity. All birds viewed had dark
eyes.We looked carefully at the forehead, which were not scallopped. We
saw no signs of any fine streaking, We saw chestnut-rumped thornbills on
other parts of the property. The calls of the birds identified as
Slaty-backed seemed different to those of the chestnut-rumped. On the
subject of eye-colour, we did not get views of red eyes - all we are
able to say is that there were no white eyes in those identified as
Slatys.
John and Ruth Walter were also at Bowra, and they told us
they saw Slatys on the day after our last sighting.
We were told Bowra is 25 kilometres or so from the Eulo
bore, where, several years ago, with our son John we were satisfied we
saw Slatys.
              Interesting little birds, aren't they?
                    Regards,
                         Grev Reidy
