Syd,
During my last two trips to Lord Howe Island 2001 and 2002 there were
NO plastic bags provided by any of the shops on LHI. It was also made
clear that plastic bags were no wanted on the island. The waste
programme that has been introduced on the island would not be able to
handle plastic bags. They have introduced a large (very big) vertical
composter and all other hard material, glass, cans, cars being replaced
etc have to be returned to the mainland. The island population appears
to support the programme.

Several years ago Lord Howe Island shops starting charging for plastic
bags
but also had reusable cloth bags for sale.
Anyone been to that earthly paradise lately and able to comment on the
success of that approach?
Syd
