Hi All,

I saw an article on the news earlier this week about an organisation that is planning to open a seaweed processing factory to produce fertilisers and other products for the export market.

In the article, its stated the vast quantities of seaweed that washes upon South Australian shores, and stated that the licensee in question, had been granted rights to collect 60% of the weed that washes up along the South Australian coast line.

The figure of 60% absolutely shocked me, and is of such a large quantity that it must equate with potentially severe environmental destruction. Along with the damage that the removal of weed will cause to marine and birdlife, the actual process of collection is much more worrying. Bulldozers on beaches!!!

Is anyone aware of any activism that has been organised about this issue?

What are some birders/wader specialists opinions on how the removal of seaweed from the coatline will affect waders and other marine life?
