Hi all
I've spent a couple of weekends recently in the Katherine area,
which is doing rather well at the moment for birds. There have been
reports of Gouldian Finches, though I didn't see them. However I
did see quite a few Pictorellas along the Central Arnhem Road
(about 50km south of Katherine, then east). There were Hooded
Parrots there also. Near Chinaman Creek there were Chestnut-
backed Button-quail, and more Hooded Parrots. Black-breasted
Buzzards have started making their way north of Katherine for the
Dry Season, along with hundreds of Black Kites, a species that
has been virtually absent for some months from northern areas.
On the Waterhouse River, I flushed a Red Goshawk, which
fortunately landed a short distance away in a tree and stayed for
several minutes before taking off again.
Certainly adds some spice to the long weekends when there are
some good birds around. (Yes I know 'all' birds are good).
Happy birdwatching
Niven
