Hi all,

While doing some survey work on Walker Island in north-west Tasmania earlier this week, I came across a covey of Swamp (Brown) Quail feeding on the track. Previously recognised as a full species in its own right, I was keen to have a close look at these birds, and paid particular attention to the bird's iris, which is meant to be pale yellow, one of the characteristics that distinguishes it from its counterparts on the mainland.

As it turned out, on the couple of birds I saw well enough, the iris colour was the same dull or dark red I'm familiar with in Brown Quail. Are their any Tasmanians on the list or others familiar with these birds who could offer any thoughts on this?

Thanks, AS
