Has there been any study as to the percentage of occurrences that appear to
be reported by birders? This query is the result of the number of sightings
of Square-tailed Kites on the south coast of NSW.

I realise that any studies would be very dependent on :

a) the number of birders in the area (permanent and transient)
and
b) the nature of the country.

Is it realistic to assume that in the more isolated areas (not necessarily
west of the ranges) only a very small number of occurrences are recorded?
If so, does it follow that some of the "rarities" recorded are not such rare
visitors at all?

Please note that these are questions and not statements. I do not have the
knowledge to make such statements and would like to hear from those who do
have "facts" and not just personal thoughts.

Please reply direct.
