Folks,
Haven't been out birding much lately, but a couple
of incidental sightings might be of interest:
Four Crested Pigeons at Mornington (east coast of
Port Phillip Bay), outside the Council offices on 13 February and three at
Ashwood Secondary College (~15 km east of Melbourne CBD) on 15
February.
Couple more sightings of up to eight Long-billed
Corellas over Syndal/ Glen Waverley (~20 km east of Melbourne) during past three
or four weeks.
Purple-crowned Lorikeets have been present in
groups of up to half a dozen or so amongst bigger flocks of Musk and Rainbow
Lorkeets in eastern suburbs of Melbourne over past three weeks, including Glen
Iris, East Camberwell and Syndal. No guarantees that there haven't been
some Little Lorikeets as well.
Looked over the fence of the Drouin sewage
treatment works (about 100 km ESE of Melbourne) this afternoon - hundreds of
waterfowl including both Teal, Hardheads, Shovelers and Pink-eared Ducks, plus
Coots and Hoary-headed Grebes, but most interestingly a scattered group of at
least 20 Red-necked Avocets in the shallowest (south-western) lagoon - by my
understanding a pretty rare species in Gippsland. Also a few Black-winged
Stilts and large numbers of Masked Lapwings, but no smaller waders that I could
see.
Good birding! Regards,
Jack Krohn
