Anonymous threats to release stoats on Codfish Island (where Kakapo recently bred) and other NZ sancturay islands have been made by deer hunters in revenge against plans by Dept of Conservation and Forest and Bird NZ to eliminate introduced deer from sensitive areas.  A claim that possums have already been released on Kapiti island is supected to be a hoax but is being investigated.

Thanks Narena Olliver for the above information.
Anyone interested in NZ birds should take a look at Narena's great website http://www.nzbirds.com/index.html
