Today between 1300-1330 Anne & I
paid a short visit to the Ash Island Ponds on Kooragang Island, Hunter Estuary
NSW. No sooner had we reached post No 19 on Wagatil Way, Ash island ponds, a
Pipit-likr bird flew from the dge of the gravel and landed on the road, and we
had a good two minutes view of a yellow Wagtail of a bird at 15 metres. This
bird had a yellow throat, white chest and whitish underparts, grey on the head,
green-grey back, white wing bars but had a prominent pale yellow eye stripe. It
disappeared from view, so we drove slowly up Wagtail Way and returned 10 minutes
later. In about the same location between Post 20 & 19, there were two
Yellow Wagtails, one bird similar to the one described above while the other had
a prominent white eye stripe. Another bird watcher arrived and we showed him the
birds and then departed. There were plenty of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, Marsh
Sandpipers, Greenshanks and Black-winged Stilts to see, along with the usual
other waterbirds and a Swamp Harrier and a Black-shouldered Kite.
