I had a similar experience here at Monash SA. Five Yellow-throated Miners and two Grey Butcherbirds, lying stretched out and panting for ten minutes, on a log near my front door, I saved it on video, when it "was over" I put out a thermometer it was 50C on the log in the sun. I think that it was a parasite control event, they had their feathers "fluffed" and let the sun onto their skin.
