Although not a shooter, store-bought duck is my favorite meat.
Having broken a tooth on shotgun pellets in the last wild duck we
consumed, a gift from a neighbour when living on a farm out of Albury, and
thinking that Galah would have been tastier and less tough, treating
numerous shooters for noise induced deafness, and sublimating twitching for
"the hunt", I nonetheless agree with Frank O'Connor that, like fishing,
shooting for the table is OK, particularly on private land, most
particularly when the ducks, particularly Woodies, have fattened on the
farmers crops.
In "Birds" the UK birdwatchers journal, some years ago I read that the
National duckshooters association owned so many reserves, bought up or
donated over the years, used for duckshooting for a few weeks a year, that
the combined area was considerably greater than all other wildlife reserves
in the UK, and that those reserves protected many other species, and were
great places for birdwatching.
Can any Poms out there positively confirm or deny that this
situation persists?
