Tony Russell/Smeagol/Unca Tones/Anton etc asks (in
his inimitable fashion) about the validity of birds ticked on islands "now
outside Oz borders". The answer to this is, I would think, quite
straightforward: Christmas Island and Ashmore Reef have simply been excluded
from Australia's migration zone. Of course, we aren't referring to bird
migration here! Politically these areas are still part of Australia and
therefore birds seen there still qualify for inclusion on one's
Australian list.
By the way, I haven't yet visited any of our
external territories (unless you include Ashmore, which as far as I'm aware is
"internal"), so my list has nothing to gain or lose in respect to this
issue. I have a personal aim of seeing 700 species on Australian soil not
including territories before setting my sights overseas. I'm not sure why -
maybe a touch of purism on my part - but I certainly don't expect anyone to care
two hoots either way. Maybe it's indifference, rather than embarrassment, that
is the reason for the silence?
