Re Penny's comments, years ago while an alderman on Darwin City Council I tried in vain to do something about both aldermasn and council staff who simply wanted to plant palms and lawn and insect-resistant exotic plants everywhere. Their reasoning? Natives were 'too messy'! I've taken the same tack with the owners of homestays and motels in the Top End suggesting that their accommodation might be more attractive to visiting birdwatchers if it were more bird-friendly. Same result!
