Bob, I cringed when I first heard the name "Kakadu Beach". My biggest
problem was with the word "beach", because the last thing I wanted people to
imagine was a swimming beach. Second was a cringe factor with the word,
"Kakadu". Of course it was a marketing decision, and not within the power of
the people with whom I was working to alter it. They were, after all, naming
a whole community residential development, and not just a wader roost.
However, I was told it was chosen to be symbolic, to instil a sense of pride
in people that we have more bird species on Bribie than at Kakadu. I am not
asserting this as a fact, the fact is that I don't really know or care which
place has more species. But I guess they must have gleaned their information
from published information. I know they drew heavily on the local Bribie
bird book for information. I did get upset when their ads boasted, I think,
more than 200 species of waterbirds, and it took me a long time to get that
message corrected, if I have succeeded at all. Marketing people have their
own agenda. All in all, I have found the company people very good to deal
with, a pleasure in fact, and they sure know a lot more about waders these
days after prolonged contact with me.

This is quite possible, given the low level of experience of the observers.
However, I thought that they would have known Little Terns. Thanks for
