Even within one species, there is inconsistency. The most widespread species is called both Rock Dove and Feral Pigeon. I think it should be called "Commensal Pigeon".

Subject: [BIRDING-AUS] doves and pigeons?

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what makes a dove a dove and a pigeon a pigeon? Are these two names used to discribe any particular attributes? I have looked in a number of books and i can not find out what makes a dove a dove and a pigeon a pigeon. Thankyou for your help.

Yours sincerely

Mr Jade Welch
