I refereed a manuscript a few months ago by David Roheder that was to be
published in "The Australian Birdwatcher" summarising the results of a
survey on Beach Thick-knees in NSW.

To very quickly answer your question, yes the number of Beach Thick-knees
is increasing very slowly but the number of breeding pairs remains small.
I don't have a copy of the manuscript at my fingertips so I can't quote
actual numbers.

Given the ecology of the species and that NSW is at the limits of their
distribution they will never be common in this state.

Cheers

David
