Hi all
There was a Black-headed Gull (possibly 2) in Darwin this evening.
It seems to be a first winter bird, with a bold black tail bar, white
leading edge to the wing and black trailing edge. It has a black
carpal joint, and a dark carpal bar. The wings are narrower and
more pointed than on Silver Gull. Overall its back and wings are
darker grey than Silver Gull. It has a dusky ear spot, and a dusky
crown. It has a yellowish-orange bill tipped black, which is longer
and slenderer than that of Silver Gull. There was at least one
juvenile Silver Gull hanging around as well. However, the juv Silver
Gull has lots of brown in its plumage as well as showing all of the
typical Silver Gull juvenile plumage and structural features, so was
readily separated from the Black-headed.
This is the second Darwin record and the third Australian record.
Cheers
Niven
