Re: 17/12/02
Some notes re. report - which has caused a flood of email!
Hope that someone can verify the sighting!
"Alerted by call, bird has prominent whitish eyebrow,
Calamanthus flew out sat up on reed, facing us, cocked tail, called took off
to the water side of plants and disappeared into it. We did try to flush
it but that was unsuccessful. I did not think it was a Little Grassbird,
because of call, tail cocked, dark at end with off white tips, also much
greyer background of back, and the front/throat creamy background -
streaked black "
Some birders have requested details of my notes. I do realise that
there has not been a confirmed sighting of Calamanthus in this area and YES
Neil & I were with John Waugh at Towra Point when we reported a
Calamanthus and have always believed that that bird seen years ago was a
Calamanthus, probably helps to muddy the water a little.
Happy birding Judi Russill
