Hi all, Just been over to Perth on business and I
went for a couple of early morning walks near the CBD and saw some interesting
birds...
Kings Park
12th
Singing and Brown Honeyeaters were
everywhere and in the Botanical Gardens area as were a number of
White-Cheeked Honeyeaters. It was great to see a lot of
Western Ringnecks which are also common in the park,
particularly on the slopes. The best bird, which I hadn't seen in the Perth area
before was a group of 6 Short-Billed Black-Cockatoos, which
were also on the slopes at the top of the path that follows the hill line
adjacent to the river. Also of interest was an Immature Brown
Goshawk in the center of the park in the scrub area as were a group of
Weebill.
Walk around the bridges
13th
This is a great walk from yr hotel, all around the
river area from the South Causeway to the bridge near Kings Park to the north.
You need to get up early if you're needed in the office for 9:00 as it took me
about 2 hours (I think its 10kms).
Around Heirisson Island Brown and Singing
Honeyeaters were everywhere as were a number of Laughing Doves.
Also on the Island was a single Common Sandpiper and
Black-Shouldered Kite.
I found some small lakes with limited reed cover on
the SthWest side of the river walk, but the birds here were very good. These
included a single Black-Tailed Native Hen a couple of
Great-Crested Gebes, 6 Hoary Headed Grebes,
Shoveler, a single Pink-Eared Duck a couple of
Musk Duck, 10 Blue-Billed Duck and heaps of
Great Egrets flying over-head in small groups. Other
interesting birds on the walk were Fairy and Tree Martins and a
group of about 40 Little Corella.
In total saw 47 species on this walk (35 on the
Kings Park walk and 55 species across the 2 walks).
These 2 walks are great early morning walks if
you're in Perth on Business and don't have time to jump in a car and go further
a-field.
