Hello Ros,

An excellent introduction is -
'A Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names' by James A Jobling, OUP 1991 ISBN
0-19-854634-3.
There is also -
'Birds - Their Latin Names Explained.' by A E Gotch. Blandford Press
ISBN 0 7137 1175 2. Published 1981.

Gotch's book was the first of its kind I found, but it is not comprehensive
and deals with selected names. Jobling's, on the other hand, attempts to cover
all of the scientific names, at the specific level, that were current at the
time.
Of course, the passage of time means that the degree of completeness is
somewhat less than it was...

Regards, Clive.
