Just back from 9 days lounging about at Wye River, between Lorne and
Apollo Bay on the Otway coastline of SW Victoria. A very leisurely time
was had by all, and some of these bird records were made whilst boogie
boarding daily in the excellent surf! Almost no serious birding took
place, but the King Parrots, Crimson Rosellas and Sulphur-crested
Cockatoos were rather self-serve. Rufous Bristlebirds serenaded us from
the back yard each morning and afternoon - as did Yellow-bellied Gliders
and Koalas by night.
Most interesting other records by my estimation were:
Black-tailed Native-hen - one bird in the park next to the swings and
see-saws; chasing and being chased by a Buff-banded Rail; probably the
most southerly BTNH I've ever seen.
Rainbow Lorikeet - not many other records down this way.
Spotted Turtle-Dove - still rare in Wye River (1-2 birds); not sure how
much longer that'll last.
Grey (White) Goshawk - always good value to see these ...
Grey Shrike-thrush - surprisingly UNcommon around Wye River.
Koala - plague proportions in the Wye-Kennett River hinterland.
