The crowd was there, the elderly and the young, and they brought along their dogs. Shouting, singing and whistling, carrying slogans and placards, fighting for rights and legislation. They called for animal rights. Rights for those animals without a vote, without a voice. A right for those animals who bring so much joy to families, to lonely people, a right for a decent life for domestic animals and livestock.

Animals have feelings, can feel and sense hurt and express their love in their own special way. But we humans think that we are masters of all, a dominant race. The call for the demonstration was a joy to see and share with all those who love their pets, who love animals. It brought together a mass of people led by Animal Rights Group, Azzjoni Pozzittiva, Catcare Association, Community Animal Welfare Society, Glue, International Animal Rescue, Island Sanctuary, Moviment Graffitti, National Cat Society, Nature Trust, St Francis Foundation for Animals, Support for Abandoned Animals, and World Animal Conscience, fully supported by Alternattiva Demokratika.

All we want is legislation and enforcement of animal rights laws.

AD has included in its manifesto that on being elected to parliament we shall:

1 Encourage cruelty-free practices such as free range methods in animal husbandry. There should be strict rules to regulate the intensive farming of animals.

2 Hunting should not be regarded as a hobby or a sport. Laws protecting animals from cruelty should apply to birds. Hunting is a cruel practice which should be actively discouraged. Hunting in spring should be abolished in line with the Berne Conventions and the EU Birds and Habitats Directive.

3 Enforcement in this sector should be improved and penalties protecting animals from cruel practices, like dog fighting, should be more severe.

4 There should be no trade, importation and breeding of exotic animals, which are protected by the Cites Convention.

5 The rights of animals used for entertainment purposes should be protected.

6 Domestic animals should be registered with the state in a way that the police would be able to trace the owner of any abandoned animal. Penalties for those abandoning their pets should be severe. Neutering should be encouraged.

7 There should be an emphasis on animal rights in education.

8 The habitat of wild animals should be protected from development.
We made a point, we took a stand. We await action from our legislators. Animal rights? is an integral part of AD?s ideology and vision.
