Subject: Wader conservation Victoria
Further to Alan Leishman's posting on wader conservation, the following is taken
from the Final Recommendation Reports on Great Knot and Grey-tailed Tattler.
These species are now listed as threatened in Victoria under the Flora and Fauna
Guarantee Act.
Great Knot
'Current evidence indicates that observations of Great Knot in Victoria have
declined dramatically over the last decade. There has been a population crash
in reports of the species in Victoria since 1991, with just 167 birds estimated
to be now visiting the state.'
and
'There are three main threats to the long-term conservation of migratory
waterbirds generally: habitat loss, habitat degradation and harvesting of
waterbirds. The major threats to Great Knot appear to be from hunting and
habitat loss in China (Watkins 1993).'
Grey-tailed Tattler
'A summary of long-term count data for the Grey-tailed Tattler in Australia
shows a crash in the population visiting southern Australia in particular.
Wilson (2001) indicated that the species has almost disappeared from Victoria,
with the most likely reasons for the decline being due to threats acting on the
taxon in other countries on the flyway to Australia.'
Hard copies of these short reports are available to interested parties. Please
supply a postal address.
cheers
