I have just come back from 6 days in SE QLD (7-13 Nov). I have listed all
the places I visited. Highlights for me were the Black-necked Storks at
Noosa and Logans Reserve, and of course seeing Albert's Lyrebird up close.
Wynnum Mangrove Boardwalk/Lytton - Thursday 7 November
Eastern Curlew, Whimbrel, Mangrove Gerygone, Mangrove Kingfisher, Golden
Whistler, Chestnut Teal, Leaden Flycatcher, Olive-backed Oriole, Little
Shrike-thrush (?), Red-backed Fairy-wren, 1 Brown Quail, Tawny Grassbird,
Golden-headed CIsticola, Chestnut-breasted Mannikin.
Boondall Wetlands/Nudgee Beach - Friday 8 November
Mangrove Gerygone, Mangrove Kingfisher, Mangrove Honeyeater (only 1 seen),
Variegated Fairy-wren, 4 Brahminy Kite, Osprey (bathing in ocean on tidal
flats), Rainbow Bee-eaters, Whiskered and Gull-billed Terns, Whimbrel,
Bar-tailed and Black-tailed Godwits, Pacific Golden Plovers, Marsh
Sandpiper, Figbirds, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Oystercatcher, Tattlers?
Difficult to id smaller waders without a scope.
Minippi Parklands - Friday 8 November
Disappointing, not many birds. Ponds clogged up.
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Maleny - Saturday 9 November and Monday 11
November
many Red-legged Pademelons, some with joeys, a Noisy Pitta (first bird seen
on path), Green Catbirds and Wompoo Fruit-Doves everywhere, 2 Russet-tailed
Thrush, Brown Cuckoo-Dove, a Little Shrike-thrush, Pale-yellow Robin and
Eastern Yellow Robin, large Lace Monitor, Rufous Fantail, Large-billed
Scrubwren and Brown Gerygone nests being used, Black-faced Monarch,
Yellow-throated Scrubwren, Golden Whistler, Lewins Honeyeater, Eastern
Whipbird, Superb Fruit-Dove, etc.
Noosa - Saturday & Sunday 9-10 November
Lake Doonella: 1 Black-necked Stork, Osprey, Brahminy Kite, Mangrove
Gerygone, 2 Striated Heron, Gull-billed, Whiskered and Caspian Terns,
Little Corella, Whistling Kite, Blue-faced, Lewins and Brown Honeyeaters,
Little Wattlebird.
Noosa NP: Diamond Python. Very windy afternoon and few birds. Too many
tourists. Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove calling in rainforest.
Karawatha Forest Park - Monday 11 November
2 Rufous Night-herons, Red-browed Finches, Hardhead, White-throated
Honeyeater, Sacred Kingfisher and possible Forest Kingfisher? in flooded
melaleuca forest.
Mt Tamborine NP - Tuesday 12 November
Large-billed Scrubwren, Lewin's Honeyeater and Brown Gerygone everywhere.
Palm Grove Section: 1 Albert's Lyrebird, Pademelon, Land Mullet (skink),
Pale-yellow Robin, Logrunners.
Joalah section: Black-faced Monarch on nest, its mate chasing Satin
Bowerbird away, Green Catbirds.
The Knoll section: large Lace Monitor, Logrunners.
MacDonald section: Wompoo Fruit-Dove, Little Shrike-thrush, Pale-yellow
Robin, Superb Fruit-Dove calling, some 3 Little Wattlebirds in canopy.
Witches Falls section: 1 Spectacled Monarch, Logrunners, 1 Albert's
Lyrebird (local birder saw 6 that morning!), Wompoo Fruit-Dove, Pale-yellow
Robin, Superb Fruit-Dove calling, Red-backed Fairy-wren.
More difficult to find birds here than at O'Reillys, but that's half the
fun. Rainforest is very dry. Several walking tracks were also closed.
Tygum Lagoon, Waterford - Tuesday 12 November
2 Red-kneed Dotterels.
Logans Reserve - Tuesday 12 November
1 Black-necked Stork, 2 Black-fronted Dotterel, 2 Latham's Snipe, Cattle,
Little, Great and Intermediate Egrets, White, Straw-necked and Glossy Ibis,
Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbills, Rainbow Bee-eaters, Tawny Grassbird,
Golden-headed CIsticola, hundreds of Fruit Bats at dusk.
