Road-injured Great-crested Grebe

A more likely explanation is that the grebe mistook the road for water
at night, could not pull out of the landing when it realized the nature
of the surface and was unable to subsequently takeoff.

This is a well-known accident scenario in the US for loons and grebes.
I believe neither group can takeoff from land.
