On the weekend, along Townsville's Ross River I observed Rainbow Lorikeets
coming down in their dozens to feed on fallen mangos on the ground. They were
joined by one Scaly-breasted Lorikeet who tried to get a piece of the action but
was often chased off by the Rainbow's. Two Little Corella's were also nibbling
on fallen mangos a little furthur away. There must be a shortage of food for
them to resort to eating mangos, on the ground especially. It was the first time
I'd seen a Scaly-breasted Lorikeet on the ground. There are a few paperbarks
flowering in the vicinity, on which both species of lorikeet are feeding, but
little else.
