Periodic cicadas may be part of the explanation?  What species have you got
making so much noise, Carol?  On Tamborine Mt in southern Qld., the Razor
Grinders (Henicopsaltria eydouxii) would appear in dozens per tree trunk and
the noise was too painful to remain among them, but this happened only every
so many years - every seven years I think.
