Hi,
Spring is certainly here! I've just spent a couple of days camping at Bear
Gully on Cape Liptrap (Gippsland, Victoria). Despite some rain the birding was
excellent and fantastic flowering flora. This must be one of the best spots to
see Olive Whistler, which are currently common in the coastal heath. At one
point a pair visited a thicket right next to our campsite. The two birds come
within 5 feet or so, calling beautiful, and behaved with the curiosity of
Yellow Robin.
On a dawn walk along the beach (Bear Gully to Walkerville) I saw Olive Whistler
(x8), Hooded Plover (x2), White-Bellied Sea-eagle (x1), Kelp and Pacific Gull,
Sooty Oystercatcher, Bassian Thrush, Crescent Honeyeater, Eastern Whipbird,
Pied Currawong, White-winged Triller, Hobby, Australian Gannets, Crimson
Rosella, hundreds of Silvereye (mostly in large flocks) and thousands
Short-tailed Shearwater in a long line way out at sea - and also plenty of
Echidna and Wombat.
This is fantastic bird spot and an excellent bush campsite right next to the
beach.
