A quick trip report for the weekend (well Monday
and Tuesday anyway). Sorry I have not the time to put anything more detailed at
present.
Myself, Fiona Seers and Brett Lane went to
Chiltern on Monday afternoon and camped the night below Mt Pilot in Box
Ironbark. The birding was great. The highlight at Chiltern was undoubtedly a
Square-tailed Kite soaring over the park just inside off Lancashire Gap Road.
Also great views of Painted Honeyeater along LG road with at least two calling.
Fuscous and Yellow-tufted HEs were common and there were a few Black-chinned
about too. We failed to find Painted Buttonquail anyway during the weekend but
that, along with Regent Honeyeater, were the only key species missed.
Chiltern was good but seemed fairly mediocre
compared to Mt Pilot. We camped along Pine Gap Road. Turqouise Parrots were
pretty common offering good perched views of males and females. There was good
forest on the rise to the west of the road about 300m in. Dusky and White-browed
Woodswallows are breeding there as well as Speckled Warbler. Yellow-throated
Gerygones were present in most areas we visited during the weekend. Not much to
report at night. Heard Sugar / Squirrel Glider, Koala and Owlet Nightjar
but otherwise quiet.
Other highlights
Summit of Mt Pilot - Scarlet Robin
Skeleton road (Chiltern) - Masked Woodswallow (in a
flock of White-brows), Red-capped Robin
Fishers Lane roadside NR - Grey-crowned
Babblers
Howlong, on the Murray - Little
Friarbird
Cheers,
Simon Mustoe.
