Talking about 'magic moments' re. birding... I'd say I've had quite a
few of them in Australia, but one of the ones that really stands out
took place in early 2000 at Mt.Molloy State School. It was my third
birding trip to Cairns, and yet another search for Squatter Pigeons,
which was a tick that had eluded me thus far...

Fortunately, I came across about six birds in the sandpit/playground
area at the back of the school that day. They cooed softly and their
called reminded me of a softer version of the first few notes of a
Pheasant Coucal's call. I started this calling repartee with one bird in
particular. This individual followed me from the back of the school,
around to where my car was parked at the front of the school. It walked
right up to the passenger door of the car, whilst we called to each
other, and seemed almost to consider getting in!!!

To have had such a close encounter with a bird I'd been after for ages,
whilst the sun was setting, the humidity hummed and the northern world
seemed aglow with majesty, was truly memorable and poignant.

What other 'magic moments' have other birding-aus birders had????

Peace,

Lorne.
