Hi everyone,
I had a days birdwatching on Friday and had a bit of a look at the
Bendigo area, Hird Swamp (near Kerang) and Terrick Terrick. The major
part of the days birdwatching was actually at a site near Bendigo
(Mandurang Sth) where we saw quite a number of Painted Honeyeaters; at
least six birds were flying around and calling loudly. Also at this site
were Leaden Flycatcher, Olive-backed Oriole, Restless Flycatcher,
White-throated and Brown Treecreeper, Shining Bronze cuckoo, Weebill,
Mistletoe bird, Buff-rumped and striated Thornbill, Brown-headed and
Fuscous HE, Grey Shrike-thrush, rufous Whistler, Dusky Woodswallow and
White-winged Chough.
We stopped for lunch at Terrick Terrick and checked out the picnic area
and Reagals rock. Not much moving near Reagals rock but then it was the
middle of the day. We couldn't find the Black HEs but lots of Gilbert's
Whistlers calling and beautiful Rainbow Bee-eaters all around the picnic
area. Also saw or heard Peaceful Dove, Mistletoe bird, Tree Martin,
Common Bronzewing, Brown Goshawk, Jacky Winter, Red-capped Robin,
Diamond Firetail, Brown-headed and White-plumed HE, Crested Shrike tit.
Had a good look around Hird Swamp and it was quite an impressive little
swamp. Didn't see any Orange Chats but did see the Brown Quail on the
Sth side. Other birds included 100s (poss. 1000s) of Black-tailed Native
Hens, Grey teal, Hardhead, Clamorous Reedwarbler, Brown Songlark,
White-necked heron, White-fronted Chat, Little Grassbird, Rainbow
Bee-eater, Black-winged Stilt, Black-fronted and Red-kneed Dotterel,
100s of Whiskered Terns in beautiful breeding plumage, Long-billed
Corella, Whistling Kite, Swamp Harrier, Brown Falcon, Nankeen Kestrel.
