Alan and I have been fortunate enough to do a bit of
birding lately, firstly around Paddy's Ranges
(Maryborough Area - box-ironbark country about 130 km
north west of Melbourne) where in early September we
saw White-backed Swallows and on grand final day
Masked and White-browed Woodswallows.

Closer to home at the end of September, I found a
Tawny Frogmouth roosting in the Melbourne General
Cemetery in Carlton (about 3 km north of the CBD).
>From the whitewash on the ground last week (below the
cypresses on the northern boundary), I suspect it is
still around.

Then last weekend a couple of hours touring around
Newport (about 10 km west of Melbourne) were very
rewarding, the highlights being a Crested Shrike-tit
and Black-eared Cuckoo at Newport Lakes Reserve and
two Great Crested Grebe and a Royal Spoonbill at
Jawbone Reserve. (also three Crested Pigeons on the
lawn)
