Surprising as it may seem, I tend to agree with you. The only problem I
have is your generalisations.

There are many farmers who use the most modern methods of conservation.
Many of these people put more time and money into conservation than any city
dweller.

I know one particular Queensland grazing family who have done everything you
would suggest but have still run into problems. The main problem is that
the drought in their area has lasted for almost eight years. They run
virtually no stock now but no stock means no income. Any excess they made
during the good years was put into rehabilitating the country that had been
ruined in the past. They planted trees that belonged in the area, reduced
stock, removed weeds, fixed erosion, etc. Now they have a property that no
one will buy but cannot provide them with an income. They are too young to
retire but too old to change jobs. What do you suggest?

Cheers

Terry
